Film of the Week : Battle Royale

Battle Royale (2000) is set in the future where the Japanese government have passed the Battle Royale act. A class of school children are trapped on an island, given weapons and pan lids and told to kill each other until one is left.

The film mainly follows the trials and tribulations of Nanahara and Noriko and includes some amazing fight sequences and intense drama. The film also stars Chiaki Kuriyama who went on to appear in Kill Bill Part 1 playing Gogo Yibari an associate of O-Ren Ishii. She is cast as a severely disturbed 17-year-old schoolgirl who enjoys killing for fun - type casting?

This film was adapted from a book by Koushun Takami and directed by Kinji Fukasaku. Check out the trailer and some screen shots after the jump.

Superman Red Son

What if Superman had landed in the USSR? That is the question Mark Millar's Superman Red Son examines.

The plot stays away from shifting Superman to the role of villain which is a wise move in our eyes. Instead he is the hero of the Soviet Union fighting for Stalin, socialism and the international expansion of the Warsaw pact. He grows up on a farm on a Ukrainian collective farm and his human name is a state secret.

Matthew Shlian's paper sculptures

"Warped Stellation"

Too continue a theme of artists who construct paper works, for your pleasure, Matthew Shlian.

Matt Shilan's statement initially reads "As a paper engineer my work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawings and three dimensional forms. I use my engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture which have lead to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. We work on the nanoscale, translating paper structures to micro origami. Our investigations extend to visualizing cellular division and solar cell development. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principals; I see their inquiry as basis for artistic inspiration. In my studio I am a collaborator, explorer and inventor. I begin with a system of folding and at a particular moment the material takes over. Guided by wonder, my work is made because I cannot visualize its final
"Thesis"

realization; in this way I come to understanding through curiosity.". To continue reading nip onto his websites statement page, HERE. Or for that matter to visit his whole website visit www.mattshlian.com.

Matts works combine colours, composition and form together in a aesthetically wonderfully way. On his website he is selling the book which is advertised in this video below, whilst you may not buy one you should defiantly have a look at the one below as it is awesome.
