The RISD Moonbuggy

For quite a while at the hub, I and a few others have had what could be called, because it is, a D.I.Y. bike obsession. Call it what you will this brilliant group entered NASA’s Great Moonbuggy Race, and won. The Rhode Island School of Design or RISD are these aforementioned winners. Please enjoy their exploits.

The web site dedicated to this project among others is www.bryancloyd.com , the statement on the site states "NASA’s Great Moonbuggy Race, which is held annually at the Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama, challenges students to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered vehicles that can whiz across a simulation of a rugged lunar landscape. Teams are judged by how quickly and easily their vehicles negotiate the twisting curves, treacherous gravel pits and other obstacles of a half-mile course riddled with some of the same challenges faced by Apollo-era astronauts in their lunar rovers. Last year RISD was the first design school to ever enter the competition. RISD "took home third place in their first race appearance, despite having no engineers on their team (all team members are Industrial Design students)," as NASA put it in their press release." to read more and somehead cam footage from the race catch the jump.

Pasha Coxhill - Tall Bikes, Wooden Bikes and Bike Wars

Pasha Coxhill and Co are spearheading a new wave of bicycle enthusiasm in Liverpool.  SHUBs Richard MacDonald interviews this charming gent and discovers some of his brilliant creations.

Q: So who are you?
A: I'm Pasha Coxhill and this is the Number 2 Bike Company.

Q: What were the motivations for the company?
A: I used to work for Cycling Solutions, a company in Liverpool who go into schools to teach kids, ages 9-10, how to ride bicyles on the road. They got a massive gig off the council to get new bikes into deprived areas and they needed a mechanic to sign the bikes off as officallyroadworthy so I got the job doing that. The must have been about 400 bikes, so I learnt a lot about bike maintainance and getting them running.
The hours from that job started dwindling a bit as the funding was being cut and I thought 'Uh Oh, i've gotta get some money' well I knew a bit about bikes and i've got a mate down at the tip and I know Bulky Bob (a company working with councils to recycle and reuse bulky household waste) so I went to Bulky Bob and said “look give me any old bikes, I'll give you a fiver each bike, take them home, do them up and sell them on... just to make some money... to pay the rent, then it went crazy!

Ride with us on tall bikes, wooden bikes and bike jousting, after the jump...

Wheel Fanatyk : Ghisallo Wood Rims & Morizumi Spoke Machines.

Lower spoke tensions and a more comfortable ride. Wood rims operate in a very similar way to how carbon rims now do, using a light weight dampening material in place of metal. Plus they just look so good. You to see more about the process of construction or for more information on the rims visit Wheel Fanatyk. Or you can purchase wooden rims from Ghisallo on Ebay, Enjoy.

Cardboard Bike Helmet

This helmet can allegedly take 4 times as much punishment as its plastic counterpart.
It was designed by Anirudha Surabhi and has also apparently survived five repeated tests and still passed the British Standard (EN 1078) test.

This post is just a quick topical "glad you are OK" to Aran Prior of SH. I found this and thought of you buddy.

The BHPC : The British Human Power Club

The online site of this publication headlines all racing and also some design processes that are going on. To visit their web-page got to www.bhpc.org.uk. Also for more images some of the construction continue reading after the jump.

Their online statement says "There is a wealth of Human Power related information on the Internet. Much of this information is produced by the BHPC and on these pages we will attempt to bring together as much of that as possible in one place."

"The BHPC organise a series of races each year, and in turn with other members of the IHPVA, organise a world championship event. Links to the results of these can be found in the panel on the right."

"The BHPC Magazine is a quarterly publication and available either by joining the club, or individually using the shop. Thanks to Dave Larrington, we have been able to make available scanned copies of many of the older issues for download."

Steampowered Bikes - Steampunks Revenge!

A bicyle powered by a steam engine sounds like it something that roared straight out of the sepia-stained pages of a steampunk tale.  Gusts of steam rise through fog bound warehouses, chains and gears clank and grumble. Mutton chopped heros chase down clockwork automatons through the gritty cobbled streets of Victorian London, whilst genius-supervillans plot world domination through rooms of cigar-smoke and polished brass.  You can almost smell the tweed.

Alas, such men and their marvelous machines are destined to remain in the pages of fiction... or are they?

Tom Sepe's Steampunk "Whirlygig Emoto"

Tom Sepe is Steampunk artist, performer and fabricator. You can see some of his wonderful creations and visit his rather beautiful personal website here.

Tom's bike is essentially an electric bike with steam-powered effects - but is that all we can hope for? Is a true steam powered bike possible? Yes, yes it is.

Renovo Hardwood Bicycles

For a long time it has been a personal fascination of mine to make my own bicycle frame. On the hub there was a previous article about Making Your own Carbon Fibre Bike frame this post follows in that same ilk. Thankfully for the hub i am not the only person in this world who likes the idea of their own bespoke bike frame, this post was sourced, found and all thanks to Mr William Clarke.

Renovo statement on their website says "We’re not making wood bicycle frames because we’re woodworkers. We’re not. Hell, we’re not even carpenters. Two of us took woodshop in middle school, but that’s it. We can’t make a desk or dresser, or build a house, nor have we, though I suppose we could probably figure it out. We’re just engineers/designers who chose wood as the material of choice for bicycles because of its excellent properties. It didn’t hurt that we had the equipment necessary to make wood bikes, but we also have the equipment and training to make metal bikes, and carbon bikes too, for that matter. Frankly, these other materials were half-considered every now and then as relief from the ordeal of trying to create an apology-free wood bike. It took a great deal of research, testing, trying and crying before we had a good bike. Historically, wood bikes came before metal bikes and we only half jokingly say ‘metal bikes were invented because making a wood bike is such a pain in the ass.’ Well, it is hard to work with, but we get better every day and there’s a lot of satisfaction in conquering this unruly stuff."

To read more about these fantastic and beautiful machines, see some more images and to get a link to Renovo's website and see all there other bikes catch the jump.

The Inner City Bikes : ICB 36 and the ICB 29

"ICB 26"

Inner City Bikes have tried to redefine bicycles for short city commuting. Their website states is “The world doesn’t need another bike redesign—the world needs thoughts on simplification, part reduction and greater product life span. Our lives need attention and care, not the objects that serve us.”

"The inner city bike was designed by JRUITER + studio as a project asking questions about ultra short inner city travel. What is needed, who is riding, and how far are they going. At first glance it was a fun aesthetic opportunity in new trends, color, and materials. Our target lived / worked in an inner city environment with minimal space. Bicycling at this level can be more about fashion and culture than speed and performance." Catch the rest of this statement and more pictures  after the jump.

How to build your own carbon fibre bike

This is a how to on how to build your own carbon fibre bicycle. Its by a forward thinking man named Brano Meres and the results are frankly fantastic.

In Brano explains all of the materials used and how he overcame design problems within the project. A few tips here and there and with enough time and effort you too could make a bike like this.
