Jeff de Boer : Armor for Cats and Mice

"15th Century Maximilian Rat"

A few years ago i stumbled across Jeffs' work, both technically amazing and fascinating. Jeff's farther was a professional tin smith and many of his skills stem form that relationship. His works are both amusing an incredibly beautiful. Showing what a little idea with astonishing implementation can create a fantastic series of works.

Jeff's website Bio states "Jeff de Boer was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1963, the fourth child of Dutch immigrants Andy and Maria de Boer. Being that his father was a professional tin smith, Jeff grew up exposed to the endless possibilities of metal. From the age of five, he knew that he wanted to be an artist. He spent his growing years painting and drawing, but just as importantly, he made objects. During his last years of high school, he started to take a serious interest in metal work and during this time built his first suit of armour. After graduating, he spent the next few years independently developing his craft, as well as learning techniques from a blacksmith. In 1984, he enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), where he majored in jewellery design. In the fall of 1986, while a student at ACAD, he combined his new skills in jewellery construction with his knowledge of armour-making to produce the world's first and only suit of armour for a mouse."

Interactive Music : Music Composed out of Dance and Movement : Palindrome

Palindrome are a group who use motion tracking and technology within performances, this technology triggers musical elements. Its a form of interactive, generative music.

You can fine their website at www.palindrome.de, I would link specific pages and videos, but its a website that uses frames so its a bit more complicated than that.

Their videos are well worth a look and they have explanations of the technology they use and how they use it.

If you have any interest in generative music or interactive music, then this website is a must to check out. It really helped me with my work in the final year of my degree.

Enjoy

Matthew Shlian's paper sculptures

"Warped Stellation"

Too continue a theme of artists who construct paper works, for your pleasure, Matthew Shlian.

Matt Shilan's statement initially reads "As a paper engineer my work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawings and three dimensional forms. I use my engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture which have lead to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. We work on the nanoscale, translating paper structures to micro origami. Our investigations extend to visualizing cellular division and solar cell development. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principals; I see their inquiry as basis for artistic inspiration. In my studio I am a collaborator, explorer and inventor. I begin with a system of folding and at a particular moment the material takes over. Guided by wonder, my work is made because I cannot visualize its final
"Thesis"

realization; in this way I come to understanding through curiosity.". To continue reading nip onto his websites statement page, HERE. Or for that matter to visit his whole website visit www.mattshlian.com.

Matts works combine colours, composition and form together in a aesthetically wonderfully way. On his website he is selling the book which is advertised in this video below, whilst you may not buy one you should defiantly have a look at the one below as it is awesome.

If you like Matthew Shlian's work see some more work after the jump or check out his website www.mattshlian.com.

Firefox Sync may be the answer to your problems

Love Firefox, use more than one computer? This fantastic little Add-on lets you sync you Internet browsers across multiple computers. I for example have a dual boot desktop computer, [Windows & Ubuntu] and a laptop [Ubuntu] all sync'ed together, as Joanna Lumley would say "lovely".

The Add-on gives you a code and then all your browser history and favorites are stored in an online cloud and changes happen across all your computers when you alter a favourite. Even if you don't have more than one PC and are just formatting and reinstalling, this will backup all of your favorites and you will not need to put them all in a again, or export the master file [although this is always a good idea to keep backed up].

If your interested install Firefox syncFirefox sync and give it a go. The only piece of advice for you is when it says don't loose this code, write the code down.

Cracking bit of freeware and yet another reason why Firefox is quite so good. Hope its useful.

David OReilly's animations

"Autoportrait"

David OReilly's animations are colourful and entertaining, however they do posses a slightly dark element. The animations feed from a mixture of global pop culture and perhaps David's own twisted sense of humour. These videos posses a slightly cynical out look by embracing some of the darker elements of this pop culture, quite similarly to the works of Chris Ware in "The Acme Novelty Library" Just as a fore warning some of the videos contain material some viewers may find offensive. To Check out more of the Video's from David OReilly either follow the jump or click the link to David's Vimeo page, or check out his personal website at www.davidoreilly.com.

This Video is named "The External World" my favourite moment in this one is at 2:25 Enjoy!

Get Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun and Firestorm for FREE

Like many people these games were my childhood and very memorable, Red Alert particularity. Also because Red Alert, due to overuse exploded in the family CD drive killing the computer. But there’s no danger of that this time as these versions are digital.

I must stress that this is not piracy and is completely legitimate, and came from the official Command and Conquer website which is visit able from HERE. If you'd like to download all 4 games the link to the site is HERE. Unfortunately this is not a mac friendly download but if you do want to play any game on mac or for that matter use any windows software on mac try running the open source software Darwine. Darwine is not a windows emulator it just sets the file structure so that windows programs will work without having to use anything like bootcamp. There's a little more info after the jump.

Richard Sweeny's Paper Sculpture's

Icosahedron II

UK Based Richard Sweeny's paper sculptures combine the beauty of precision and the delicate aspects of paper. The Majesty of Sweeny's work mirrors architecture and works on a basis of simplistic sculptural form. The Engineering like precision which goes into Sweeny's work is fantastic, this precision is only emphasised by the use of reductionism within the pieces. Whilst they may be extremely complex and elaborate their structure and grounding is in the simplistic nature of their design. Each component is balanced by the next creating a structural unity which is endearing to say the least about the work.

Floral Corsage

Enjoy the images of the work, If you are a fan of this post check out Jen Stark's Paper Sculpture's or to go to Richard Sweeney's web-page, click the link HERE. Catch more images after the jump.
