Make your own comic strips

Here are a couple of sites where you can go to make your own animations. We have been playing around with them for days at SH. They require next to no prior knowledge of this sort of stuff. They work quite simply on a drag and drop system allowing novices and experts alike to create what they want.

Old Skool Games Meet Nu Skool Games

Think of a computer game where the main playthings are boxes, and platforms, a game were you can jump into a hole and magically reappear at another part of the level almost instentaneously. Think you know what game i'm talking about, eh? That's right, 1985s Super Mario Bros!

What? You weren't thinking of Super Mario Bros? You were thinking of Portal? Well yeah, that's a good game too but it doesn't have a fat hairy italian in it though, but it does have a really cool gun. *sigh* if only there was some way we could combine the two...

Fake or Foto?

Today we're presented with images in movies, on TV, and in the press that are of such good quality we don't even think to consider whether the picture is of something that exists in reality or if it was generated by computer software. Movies can be considered as being at the high-end of the range of uses for computer generated imagery that mimics real-life, but there are many more day-to-day examples that challenge our ability to tell what's real and what's not.

Spend a few minutes with our reality check and see if you can tell the difference...

Superman Red Son

What if Superman had landed in the USSR? That is the question Mark Millar's Superman Red Son examines.

The plot stays away from shifting Superman to the role of villain which is a wise move in our eyes. Instead he is the hero of the Soviet Union fighting for Stalin, socialism and the international expansion of the Warsaw pact. He grows up on a farm on a Ukrainian collective farm and his human name is a state secret.

David OReilly's animations

"Autoportrait"

David OReilly's animations are colourful and entertaining, however they do posses a slightly dark element. The animations feed from a mixture of global pop culture and perhaps David's own twisted sense of humour. These videos posses a slightly cynical out look by embracing some of the darker elements of this pop culture, quite similarly to the works of Chris Ware in "The Acme Novelty Library" Just as a fore warning some of the videos contain material some viewers may find offensive. To Check out more of the Video's from David OReilly either follow the jump or click the link to David's Vimeo page, or check out his personal website at www.davidoreilly.com.

This Video is named "The External World" my favourite moment in this one is at 2:25 Enjoy!

Nathan Jones Animator and Graphic Designer

Most if not all of the SalubriousHUB team were lucky enough to get to know and even work along side Nathan Jones at University. His Work is blessed with an intrinsic style of its own which carries remarkably well into animation. The precision and use of mark-making allows for some stunning imagery and provocative design. Nathan does contribute to SalubriousHUB as a researcher, finding the brilliant form the bowels of the internet to show you.

Nathans works are mostly pencil drawings, washed with water colours and inked, then illustrated with a Wacom tablet in Adobe Photoshop. In the case of the animations this same technique was used followed with the use of Adobe Flash in which some illustration was done to bulk out the PS work.

The first animation is titled "Creatures of the Deep", the second "Doritos Ad - Fishin" and the last which is after the jump is named "Army Ants by Tom Waits". To view or subscribe to Nathan's Youtube Channel click the link, HERE, or to find more of his work online check his Deviantart profile by clicking the link, HERE.

Take the Jump at the end of the post another brilliant animation and some more illustrations from Nathan. Nathan is one if the finest draughtsmen I have ever had the pleasure to meet and an awesome bloke to boot. Hope you enjoy his work and feel free to comment at the bottom if you have anything to say on any of the pieces.

LED Solar-Powered Watch

The Solaris v1 is the perfect blend of eco-power and cool design. Running from a minimal solar panel and using low power LED's to show the time, this really is a step in the right direction. Also pushing this achingly cool design how could this watch not do well.

For more images and a full explanation of how the watch actually tells the time, catch the Jump below.

Alexander Baynes Illustrations

Icons of London - sourced at www.artgallery.co.uk

Alexander Baynes uses simplistic color design twinned with a stylistic reductionist approach to create these artworks. His works often depict icons, whether these "icons" are architectural or physiological is more dependent on the work in question. His work is seductive to the eye in its simplicity and allows the viewer to respond and come to their own conclusions about the depiction, based on visual assumptions and the inherent semiotics within each piece.

The precise yet relaxed visual style of both the imagery and the mark-making found within his work is endearing to the viewer. This relaxed and gestural approach to the imagery allows for a less academic interaction between viewer and work which is often overlooked within contemporary conceptual art.
