Symphony of Science

There is a trend now-a-days for "Auto-Tuned" music, if you have managed to escape it thus far then you are a lucky lucky person as the majority of it is utter drivel!

There are a few gems out there though!

I think this is my favourite so far! Not to sure how much of it is actually auto-tuned as supposed to being re-tuned to specific notes (rather than automatically tuned to the nearest notes)

Living Sculptures - Non-Newtonian Fluid

I have been traipsing through the depths of the internet recently and have found some very interesting things! This is the first in a series of posts, of things that are just amazing, well i think so any way, its all about music, science, art and everything!

This is Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone, basically thick sloppy stuff that you play sound through and it makes weird evolving sculptures. Its really interesting and I could watch this type of thing all day!

And here is a Canon advert of something similar

The Williamson Tunnels

Deep beneath Liverpool, England lie and long forgotten about network of tunnels, caverns and chambers.  They lie forgotten about beneath Liverpool and YOU CAN HELP save them by voting at the website below.  Please vote for our good friends The Joseph Williamson Society.

http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/5968

They were dug over 200 years ago by an eccentric rich merchant called Joseph Williamson. He spent about thirty years of his life paying unemployed men to dig these tunnels and then he died in 1840 - without leaving any maps, plans or telling anybody what the heck he was playing at!

SHUB have been privileged enough to be allowed to explore part of this hidden network, big thanks to the Joseph Williamson Society.

They are a small charity being run by volunteers and need your help to secure £6000 of funding.

If you could spare two minutes to register and vote for the Joseph Williamson Society at the NatWest Community Force Wesbite

http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/5968

it would be greatly appreciated. For two minutes of your time you could help save a unique part of Britains heritage.

On behalf of SHUB, Thank You.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Spec Ops Survival

COD : MW2 Spec-Ops was an overlooked beauty of a game play mode. Whilst Black Ops was all well and good MW3 stands to bee a better game all together. Bearing this in mind, have a good look at this new Spec-Ops Survival mode some rather unfriendly chaps turn up at different points. For anyone who played world at war the 7 killstreak is back with bombs on. Any any one who loved MW2 Spec-Ops the sheer horror of High Explosive looks to be more than likely again, Enjoy

Film of the Week : Se7en

Well this is just a great thriller, to reference the League of Gentlemen "How many killins?". If your squeamish... don't watch it. If you like a good film with a frankly awesome cast, this ones for you. 1995 saw Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, R. Lee Ermey and one other ace actor who I don't want to give away grace our screens for this genius pinch of film.

If you haven't seen it or want a reminder, this trailer does not conform to modern day trailers, i.e. just totally give away the whole film. In fact it probably doesn't quite do it justice, but we can't always be happy can we. Catch the film if you can. Enjoy

Timescapes

Timescapes is a series of time lapse films that utilise Kessler technology - http://www.kesslercrane.com/

The Kessler Cranes are mounts for your cameras that run on tracks with motors and do all kinds of crazy things and add a sense of movement in to the time lapse films. Some of the effects that have been achieved are mind blowing! and They have recently introduces a way in which alter focus during the camera movement too!!

Just think of the mental effects you could get when they make them tilt and shift compatible so that you can move the camera on 3 axis as well as the lens!

After the jump there is another video, its a Timescapes making of style video! its also well worth a look!!

Drawing Machines

Hello all! Its been quite some time since I posted! I am currently in End of Degree HELL with essays due in pieces of music ... to even conceive. Actually saying that i have been in this almost end of degree hell for quite some time now, the stress is taking its toll and I may be taken away by the men in white suits rather soon!!

BUT before that happens here is something that I think is Brilliant.

As much as I love actually doing something my self (writing music, drawing, desining what ever!) I am essentially .... a man. A stereotypical man! (sorry no sexism meant by this) but what that does mean is I am always looking for ways in which to get out of doing work. Ok this is a complete lie but I am very interested in the systems and ideas behind projects that create autonomously, Generative Art. Setting a process in motion and the product is done for you, be it music, film, art. I especially love it when you can see said process.

Check out the Video after the jump of one in action

Porter Robinson's Capture the Can

Beautiful slow-mo paint-ball war, enjoy as people display their frankly disturbing accuracy with paint-ball gun. Also it would be quite funny to see someone actually try to do half these things in an actual paint-ball game. There's the film its self and the making of, just after the jump. Porter Robinson well done sir.

Film of the Week : The Incredibles

This film just has to be one of Pixar's all time greats. The Incredibles was released in 2004, with voice talents such as Samuel L. Jackson [Frozone] and Jason Lee [Syndrome]. Also this film featured Pixars staple short in this case "Jack Jack Attack". I really can't stress this enough, SEE THIS FILM!!!

Oh and enjoy the trailer

Water Fountain Printer

The Japanese have created this beauty in Osaka City Station. It's a water fountain that seems to double up as a basic dot-matrix printer. By changing the flow of the water the fountain can create beautiful pictures, messages and even acts like a clock.

It has to be seen to be believed.

The RISD Moonbuggy

For quite a while at the hub, I and a few others have had what could be called, because it is, a D.I.Y. bike obsession. Call it what you will this brilliant group entered NASA’s Great Moonbuggy Race, and won. The Rhode Island School of Design or RISD are these aforementioned winners. Please enjoy their exploits.

The web site dedicated to this project among others is www.bryancloyd.com , the statement on the site states "NASA’s Great Moonbuggy Race, which is held annually at the Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama, challenges students to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered vehicles that can whiz across a simulation of a rugged lunar landscape. Teams are judged by how quickly and easily their vehicles negotiate the twisting curves, treacherous gravel pits and other obstacles of a half-mile course riddled with some of the same challenges faced by Apollo-era astronauts in their lunar rovers. Last year RISD was the first design school to ever enter the competition. RISD "took home third place in their first race appearance, despite having no engineers on their team (all team members are Industrial Design students)," as NASA put it in their press release." to read more and somehead cam footage from the race catch the jump.

Freedom Tower

Normally we steer clear of news stories in our posting. However today marks the tenth anniversary of the attrocities in America it is apt to post about Freedom Tower - currently under construction at Ground Zero.

On March 30 2009, it was confirmed the building is to be known as'One World Trade Center', rather than 'Freedom Tower'.When finished probably in 2013, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the US, standing at a height of 1,776 feet (541.3 m), and will be among the tallest buildings in the world.

This post is dedicated to those who have lost their lives to terrorism as well as the service men and women from around the world who have lost theirs in pursuit of terrorists.

Make your own comic strips

Here are a couple of sites where you can go to make your own animations. We have been playing around with them for days at SH. They require next to no prior knowledge of this sort of stuff. They work quite simply on a drag and drop system allowing novices and experts alike to create what they want.

The Entire Universe in Scale.

Have you ever wondered how big an atom is compared to say... a Boeing 747?  This interative display is certainly for you.  Created by Cary Huang this is a sliding scale that takes you in a few seconds from the smallest length possible (Planck Length) 0.00000000000000000000000000000000001m (10-35 m) to the estimated size of the universe itself - 93,000,000,000 light years.

http://primaxstudio.com/stuff/scale_of_universe/

This is a must see, although be warned, it may leave you feeling ever so slightly small and insignificant when it comes to the size of the rest of existance.

The weird world of music copyright...

Did you know that a co-author of Jay-Z's track 'Takeover' is an obscure folk musician who has been dead for nine years... even though nothing of his original song is used in the music?

This is the weird world of American copyright legislation.
