Nam June Paik was a South Korean artist widely seen as the first to work with video. He became best known for his inventive use of technology often creating closed circuit television installations and manipulating TV imagery.

He also made a number of robot sculptures and alongside Japanese video technician Shuya Abe was responsible for developing the Video Synthesiser which revolutionised video editing allowing the artist to distort colour and shape within video images.

Tate Liverpool and FACT, Liverpool are currently jointly staging the first major UK retrospective of Paik's work. This runs until Thursday 31 March 2011.
