Thor : Trailer 2

I cant really say Ive been a devout fan of the comic series of Thor throughout my life. I also can't say that i was particularly excited by the concept of a seemingly procedural Thor movie by Marvel seemingly to facilitate the Avengers. However now i am converted, particularly with two scenes in this trailer, with quotes of "You dare threaten me, Thor with so pewney a, weapon!" and "This drink I like it; Another!". We will have to see whether or not the son of Odin makes a welcome entrance to the silver screen. But certainly at this point it looks allot better than first expected.

Film of the Week: Total Recall

After the shock horror announcement that there is to be a remake of this classic with Colin Farrell as Quaid, we thought it was time to look at what made this movie such as classic.

Although it was released in 1990, it slips neatly into the the plethora of great sci-fi that were produced in the 1980s and carries with it some of the humour that charactarises that decade. Directed by Paul Verhoeven (who later did Starship Troopers.) It's a comic book gore-fest with a neat twist, probing into the murky world of reality vs fantasy.

It's easy to see how the screenplay was based on story "We Can Remember It For You, Wholesale." by science fiction superstar Philip K Dick - who also gave us, Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report (in fact the script for the film Minority Report started out as a sequel to Total Recall.)

The film should be remembered for its eye-popping special effects: a womans head opening to reveal Quaid hidden inside, the effects of the low pressure atmosphere on Quaid as he battles Cohaagen on the slopes of the red planet and of course *that* woman in the bar.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Rachel Ticotin... it's a cast to be proud of.

And it also gave us, in my opinion, one of the most under rated lines in film:

Anthony McCall - Light and Cloud

Apparently we're hosting the Olympics.  Not SHUB... no... the UK is.  Besides, the 200 metre rewire probably wouldn't go down very well.
Photo by Peter Macdiarmid from Zimbo.com

Every Olympics comes with what they call the 'Cultural Olympiad'. The four year long UK Olympiad is projected to be "largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements."  During this time some stunning works of art, films, photography, music and outdoor events are planned.

One piece by the artist Anthony McCall (above) has caught my attention.

Film of the Week : The Thing

1982 saw one of the best sci-fi film remakes of all time John Carpenters "The Thing", staring Kurt Russell, Keith David and Wilford Brimly.

Featuring the brilliant special effects work of the late Stan Winston, and some amazing matte paintings from his studio. This film was a chilling and beautiful look into the creators minds. A story of mistrust and inquisition in Antarctica. Without films like this we would not have been able to experience things like the modern day cult remake classic Battlestar Gallactica. A fantastic piece of cinema and a Genre classic, Enjoy!

Interactive Music : Music Composed out of Dance and Movement : Palindrome

Palindrome are a group who use motion tracking and technology within performances, this technology triggers musical elements. Its a form of interactive, generative music.

You can fine their website at www.palindrome.de, I would link specific pages and videos, but its a website that uses frames so its a bit more complicated than that.

Their videos are well worth a look and they have explanations of the technology they use and how they use it.

If you have any interest in generative music or interactive music, then this website is a must to check out. It really helped me with my work in the final year of my degree.

Enjoy

Pleasures of Paradox : Hirotoshi Itoh's Sculpture

Hirotoshi Itoh combines stone carvings and everyday objects to come to intriguing and interesting sculptural conclusions. Sometimes these conclusions may be a little dark or perhaps a fraction strange, but they always look incredible. Too few artists use traditional media in this day and age, although the few who do use these traditional media do inherit a certain amount or subjective value.

Regardless of analysis the works really speak for themselves in being remarkably beautiful as objects. Created with wit, often a precise and impressive amount of technical knowledge and skill.
Hats of to you Hirotoshi Itoh you have got our vote. too see more of Hirotoshi's work either catch the jump at the end of the post or jump to Hirotoshi's website, or his Flikr page.

DALeast's simple yet beautiful graphic style

" 'springboks' cape town-south africa 2011"

Du Yi more notably know as DALeast or DAL DALeast's simple yet beautiful graphic style is intoxicating. DAL seems to focus on almost a reduction of form just to allow a fantastic bit of imagery to come thorough.

" 'parking' cape town-south africa 2011"

DAL's website statement reads, "Du Yi landed on this planet in 1984 in China, he then decided to live as an artist in this life. He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and began doing street art at 2004 under the alias DAL. He is inspired by the way the material world revolves, how the spiritual world unfolds, life’s emotions and the infinite space around us. He uses different mediums, methods, disciplines and spaces to create his works. " Too see more form this page click the link HERE

Matthew Shlian's paper sculptures

"Warped Stellation"

Too continue a theme of artists who construct paper works, for your pleasure, Matthew Shlian.

Matt Shilan's statement initially reads "As a paper engineer my work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawings and three dimensional forms. I use my engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture which have lead to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. We work on the nanoscale, translating paper structures to micro origami. Our investigations extend to visualizing cellular division and solar cell development. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principals; I see their inquiry as basis for artistic inspiration. In my studio I am a collaborator, explorer and inventor. I begin with a system of folding and at a particular moment the material takes over. Guided by wonder, my work is made because I cannot visualize its final
"Thesis"

realization; in this way I come to understanding through curiosity.". To continue reading nip onto his websites statement page, HERE. Or for that matter to visit his whole website visit www.mattshlian.com.

Matts works combine colours, composition and form together in a aesthetically wonderfully way. On his website he is selling the book which is advertised in this video below, whilst you may not buy one you should defiantly have a look at the one below as it is awesome.

Film of the Week : The Fifth Element

Sorry about last weeks Film of the Week life got a touch too busy just around the point of writing, and so at some point perhaps this week we shall try to bring you an extra one to make up for last week.

1997 saw the release of one of our eras best sci-fi films and the union of some fantastic actors too boot. Featuring performances from Bruce Willis [last seen in our Film of the Week : Die Hard], Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Ian Holm [last seen in our Film of the Week : From Hell], The Fifth Element tells a tale of a cab driver in a dystopic future earth, who meets a girl. Really after that the story is of its own, fantastic in our opinion but you'd really need to see it for your self. This really is not an explanation of the film but rather a teaser. A notable reference artistically [concept art that is] is Moebius, or Luc Besson.

This film really, for it's genre is in a class of its own, endlessly entertaining, light hearted and stylish, Enjoy!

Save Soho 16mm Film Lab

Please find an important message from some friends of SH. Whilst we are keen to show you new and brave technologies we are also fans of the old ways too. Please take the time to read the letter below and sign the petition.

Dear Friends of 16mm,

We have had an overwhelming response from people concerned about the
closure of Soho Film Lab's 16mm print service. To better co-ordinate the
response, we have set up an online petition aimed at persuading the
lab's new owners Deluxe to reverse the decision. Signing up the
petition is very quick and easy, you just need to go to
and click 'sign the petition' at the bottom - the process only takes
about 30 seconds.

Please also continue to circulate this to anyone else you think might be
interested. Many thanks for your amazing support, and apologies for
cross posting.

best wishes

Firefox Sync may be the answer to your problems

Love Firefox, use more than one computer? This fantastic little Add-on lets you sync you Internet browsers across multiple computers. I for example have a dual boot desktop computer, [Windows & Ubuntu] and a laptop [Ubuntu] all sync'ed together, as Joanna Lumley would say "lovely".

The Add-on gives you a code and then all your browser history and favorites are stored in an online cloud and changes happen across all your computers when you alter a favourite. Even if you don't have more than one PC and are just formatting and reinstalling, this will backup all of your favorites and you will not need to put them all in a again, or export the master file [although this is always a good idea to keep backed up].

If your interested install Firefox syncFirefox sync and give it a go. The only piece of advice for you is when it says don't loose this code, write the code down.

Cracking bit of freeware and yet another reason why Firefox is quite so good. Hope its useful.

"How to Build a Nuclear Submarine" is as close as we can get to Battlestar Galactica in 2011

"How to Build a Nuclear Submarine" is as close as we can get to Battlestar Galactica in 2011 last shown on the BBC One on the 2nd Aug 2010. This program is brilliantly informative and take you into the bowels of submarine design and construction. The program delves into the construction of the Astute class of submarines commissioned by the English Navy.

The documentary style of the program and the technology within it, also just the look of the sub, remind me of my favourite television program of the last few years, Battlestar Galactica. This is only made better by the fact that real life English people just are not as good as, Apollo and Baltar, they even have their own Admiral Adama, except just brilliantly British. A fantastic program all in all however I probably enjoy it for the wrong reasons on top of the intend information based entertainment. The first instalment of the program is below for the rest of the program, some more information about it

and some more photos catch the jump after the video, Enjoy!

David OReilly's animations

"Autoportrait"

David OReilly's animations are colourful and entertaining, however they do posses a slightly dark element. The animations feed from a mixture of global pop culture and perhaps David's own twisted sense of humour. These videos posses a slightly cynical out look by embracing some of the darker elements of this pop culture, quite similarly to the works of Chris Ware in "The Acme Novelty Library" Just as a fore warning some of the videos contain material some viewers may find offensive. To Check out more of the Video's from David OReilly either follow the jump or click the link to David's Vimeo page, or check out his personal website at www.davidoreilly.com.

Tom Bakke Rasmussen

In his own words the work of Tom Bakke Rasmussen: "Emerges at the intersection of a variety of approaches; the critical, the absurd, the analytical and the
poetic."

He works with a number of media including installation and performance. The piece above comes from a piece called The Information Bomb (2009).

At SH we are constantly searching for fresh and interesting artists to bring to your attention. The playful, chaotic anarchy of Rasmussen's work hopefully appeals to you as much as it does to us.
